Exosomes (Extracellular vesicles)

This document is technical information about materials. It does not recommend any procedure or product.

In brief

Lipid-bilayer vesicles secreted by most cell types, reported at 30 to 150 nanometres, carrying proteins, lipids and nucleic acids between cells. Unlike the other entries in this atlas they are not a defined chemical substance but a preparation, and what a given product contains depends on the source cell and the isolation method.

Identity & physical properties
SynonymsExosomes, Extracellular vesicles, EVs, Small extracellular vesicles
FamilyCell-derived vesicle preparation
Particle sizeReported at 30-150 nm for the vesicle population described as exosomes
MorphologyLipid bilayer vesicles; preparations are suspensions rather than particulate scaffolds

Mechanism

The reported mechanism is intercellular signalling rather than scaffolding. Reviews describe vesicles releasing protein, lipid and nucleic acid cargo into recipient cells and thereby modulating their behaviour, with photoaging literature describing effects on the pathways involved in ultraviolet-induced damage.

Regulatory identity — detail

MarketClassificationNoteBasis
KR unclassified Not established from public sources as of the revision date below. Preparations derived from cultured cells do not map cleanly onto the cosmetic, device and drug categories used elsewhere in this table.
EU unclassified Not established from public sources as of the revision date below.
US unclassified Not established from public sources as of the revision date below. Cell-derived preparations may fall under the human cells and tissues framework rather than the device or cosmetic categories, and the classification depends on the specific product and its claims.
JP unclassified Not established from public sources as of the revision date below.
CN unclassified Not established from public sources as of the revision date below.
VN unclassified Not established from public sources as of the revision date below.

Limitations & open questions

Every citation on this page is review-level. A search of the clinical literature did not identify a randomised controlled trial of exosome preparations for a facial aesthetic indication as of the revision date below, which means the evidence tier here is lower than for the polymer materials in this atlas. Source cell, culture conditions, isolation method and characterisation differ between preparations and are frequently not reported, so two products described as exosomes are not necessarily comparable. Reviews in this field describe the technology as early rather than established.

All statements on this page are drawn from the cited literature. Where a market’s regulatory classification could not be established from public sources, it is marked as not established rather than inferred.

What the evidence currently supports

The honest summary is that the mechanistic literature is substantial and the clinical literature in aesthetics is not. Reviews describe plausible signalling activity and report early clinical work, and the same reviews describe the field as being in its infancy. No randomised trial in a facial aesthetic indication was identified for this page.

Why “exosomes” is not one thing

The other entries in this atlas name a substance. This one names a preparation. Two products can both be described as exosomes while differing in the cell they came from, how they were isolated, and whether they were characterised at all. When a finding is carried from one preparation to another, those three variables are what determine whether the transfer is valid.
